Consul General Speaks at the Press Conference SZHK Biennale
On June 28, 2011 a press conference was organized by the city of Shenzhen for the 4th edition of the Shenzhen & Hong Kong Bi-city Biennale of Urbanism/Architecture, which will be opened on Dec. 8, 2011 and last for three whole months (SZHK Biennale).
The SZHK Biennale is sponsored by the Municipal Government of Shenzhen, organized by the Shenzhen Public Art Centre in cooperation with the city of Hong Kong. At the moment it is the only international biennale in China focusing on urban planning and architecture. Compared to the past three editions, this year the SZHK Biennale features a trend of internationalization. The idea of setting up country pavilions was contributed by Mr. Ton van Zeeland, Consul General of the Netherlands in Guangzhou which was well picked up by the organizing party this year. Besides the two counterpart cities of Shenzhen and Hong Kong, there are also other partner countries such as the Netherlands, Switzerland, Chile, Egypt, Finland, Austria and Ghana. In the last session in 2009 a Netherlands delegation made up of NAI, Dynamic City Foundation and some other architects brought in interesting projects and products such as the “Project B.A.R.C Beyond Architectural Regulation in China”, the “Go West Project” and the “Architecture of Consequence”, which were received with high enthusiasm by the audience. The Dutch participation in this year is being prepared by NAI with Mr. Ole Bouman as the curator.
At the press conference on Tuesday, the well-known American chief curator, Mr. Terrence Riley released the exhibition proposal for this year. Three other co-curator groups also revealed some basic ideas and details of the sub-projects they are working on. Municipal officials from Shenzhen expressed their high expectations and support for the exhibition. In his speech Mr. van Zeeland promoted the Netherlands creative industries, in particular architecture / urban planning. Mr. van Zeeland also mentioned the idea of an Architectual Institute for the city of Shenzhen.
